Obituary of John Hodgson Atkinson Jowett

Published in the Leeds Mercury, Tuesday , December 1, 1891

Mr. J. H. A. Jowett, of Grove House, Bolton, and Chairman of the Bradford Board of Guardians, died on Sunday, in his 49th year. For some months he had suffered from malignant cancer in the throat, and his death therefore did not take his friends by surprise.

The deceased gentleman was the second son of the late Mr. James Atkinson Jowett, of Bolton, Bradford, his elder brother being Mr. Nathan Atkinson Jowett, of Clockhouse, Manningham. His father succeeded to the large estates of the Baron, Hodgson, and Jowett families as the result of the famous “Clock House trial”, and he added largely to those estates. Prior to his decease in 1886, he made a division of his property, the Bolton estates and those in the East Riding falling into the possession of the deceased.

The later married, in 1867, Miss Euphemia Gordon, who survives, with an only son named John Gordon Atkinson Jowett.

Mr. Jowett represented the Bolton Ward in the Bradford Town Council from November, 1873, to November, 1882, and again from May, 1883, to November, 1884. He was also a member of the Bradford Board of Guardians, and at the beginning of the present year he was appointed chairman of the board.

Formerly he was connected with the 2nd West York Yeomanry Cavalry, from which he retired with the rank of captain.

Mr. Jowett was a Churchman, and at the consecration of St. James’s Church, Bolton (erected at the sole expense of his father) he presented the organ. He was also largely instrumental in promoting the erection of the vicarage house attached to St. James’s Church. He was a Conservative, but did not take a prominent part in political matters.
