Kirkcudbrightshire Research Tools and Resources

A Historical Index of the People and Places of the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright

This excellent resource contains information and GPS coordinates for places and place names in Kirkcudbrightshire. It also contains a search engine for over 300 pages of historical extracts and essays and newspaper marriage and death notices.

Kirkcudbrightshire Place Names Search

This page gives search access to the index of as many place-names within the county as we could find on the 1st Ordnance Survey maps from around 1850. The index already contains over 7,900 names. Index cards for each place then have links to allow viewing of the old OS map, to the modern OS map of the same area, to Satellite views of the area and, in some cases, to Google's Street Views of the places themselves.

Monumental Inscriptions for Several Kirkcudbrightshire Churchyards

This website contains the monument inscriptions for 9 parish cemeteries in Kirkcudbrightshire with the ability to search indiviual parishes or all parishes.

Gatehouse Folk - Then and Now

An excellent collection created by Graham and Margaret Wright of historical information and photographs associated with the people and places around Gatehouse of Fleet and the parishes of Girthon and Anwoth in Kirkcudbrightshire. The collection includes the McMurray photo collection which contains over 160 photographs converted to digital images from glass photographic plates.

Dumfries and Galloway Family History Society

Dumfries & Galloway Family History Society covers the three counties of South West Scotland - Dumfriesshire, The Stewartry of Kirkcudbright and Wigtownshire. The Society was established in 1987. Their aim is to promote the study of family history and is run by volunteers. They do not contract to do research for others, but simply act as facilitators for researchers visiting the area who are doing their own research.
